Flight training and the iPad – webinar video

Can you use an iPad during flight training? The answer is almost always yes, but a smart pilot should understand when and how to integrate technology into the learning process. Sporty’s recently hosted a webinar on the topic, which offers over an hour of tips for pilot new to the iPad.

Move over gauges, here comes the iPad

A mere 10 years ago, aircraft were still being manufactured with round (traditional) gauges originally designed for steam engines.  Think about the technology in an altimeter.  By simply measuring the difference in pressure, two small needles spin around to show you your height above mean sea level (MSL).  This simple device is hardly accurate, but […]

When all else fails, FTFA!

One of aviation’s defining characteristics is its acronyms. FAR, ILS, PTS, WAAS and hundreds more fill our flying conversations, and often confuse new pilots. At the risk of adding to the confusion, I’d like to suggest one more, but it won’t be on the Knowledge Test. FTFA, loosely translated to Fly The Freaking Airplane, has come in handy dozens of times over the course of my flying career.

Student Pilot Store

Similar to fishing, camping, rock climbing, or boating, getting the right gear for flying is almost as important (and as fun) as the actual activity. At Sporty’s, we’ve operated our own flight school for decades, so we know what student pilots need – and what they don’t.

Ode to General Aviation

Twas the day after Christmas and snow covered the land. We needed to put our toes in some water, our butts in some sand. We drove to the airport, the plane was pre-heated, Our luggage was light, no heavy clothes would be needed. We shoveled the drift from in front of the hangar door Pulled […]

The Joy of a Personal Flight

As Christmas approaches once again, I can’t help but think back to an earlier holiday and a flying experience that I had with two of my favorite passengers; my two daughters. They were a bit younger when this occurred but it is still a great flying memory and one that I’m excited to retell.

5 can’t miss stocking stuffers

For a pilot, working at Sporty’s can be compared to a daily Christmas morning. With all the pilot toys, trinkets and gear, it’s easy to get lost in the myriad of cool and interesting new things to play with. I often get asked by pilot and non-pilots alike for gift ideas for their pilot friends. Rest assured, you don’t […]

Seven winter weather flying tips

As the season transitions from fall to winter and the temperature is consistently below freezing, unique challenges are presented to pilots. Flight training doesn’t need to stop in the winter though; in fact the colder months provide some great opportunities to expand your knowledge on weather and aircraft operations in less than ideal conditions. There […]
